Internet giant Google has replaced its logo with a time-lapse animation of blooming flowers to commemorate Earth Day and raise ecological awareness. This year’s Earth Day is centred around a scheme dubbed “one billion acts of green”, which encourages individuals to make simple environmentally conscious pledges, like switching off lightbulbs or reducing car journeys.

India to join project to build largest telescope

India has decided to formally join a project to construct the world's largest telescope in the US for which a budget of Rs 700 crore has been sanctioned by the Department of Atomic Energy. Along with the US, Canada, Japan and China are members of the project and have started the early construction phase of the telescope, which is expected to be completed by 2019. The telescope will be 10 times more powerful than the world's largest Hubble telescope and will be fitted with high powered optical spectrometer, infrared imaging spectrometer and infrared multi-object spectrometer.

The USS Enterprise is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft-carrier, the Enterprise was laid down in 1958 and commissioned in November 1961, as what was then the largest warship ever built. Since exceeded in size by the Nimitz class ships, the Enterprise was built to a modified Forrestal-class design, with its larger dimensions dictated by the powerplant of eight A2W pressurised water enricheduranium fuelled nuclear reactors. The high cost of its construction prevented five other vessels in the naval building programme from being built.Enterprise is currently deployed with the Pacific Fleet and was SLEPed between 1991 and 1994. It is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2013. This warship will be replaced by the new Ford class aircraft carrier, which is currently under construction and is expected to be commissioned in 2015.

The MWC 2012 is just about to start and Samsung already has announced a new phone. The first of what we believe is a long list of phones to come is the Galaxy Beam, whose pièce de résistance is a built-in projector. The projector uses a 15 lumens lamp that is capable of projecting a 50-inch wide high-definition image, although Samsung does not mention the actual resolution.Other than that, the Galaxy Beam has a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 5 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front camera, 720p video recording, 8GB internal memory with microSD card slot, 2,000mAh battery and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The world's largest cut emerald is set to go up for auction - and is expected to fetch $1.15million. The 57,500-carat stone, which is the size of a watermelon. The gem, named Teodora, was found in Brazil and cut in India, before being sold to rare gems dealer Reagan Reaney in Calgary - but there are doubts over whether it is in fact a true emerald.

Emeralds - the birthstone for the month of May - get their green colouring from the presence of chromium within the stone and the effect it has on constituent mineral beryl. Unlike diamonds they are graded by eye. If when examined by the naked eye an emerald appears free from material trapped while it was being formed then it can be considered flawless.

Emerald crystals, like all other naturally occurring gemstone crystals, grow one molecule at a time meaning it takes prolonged periods to create a quality gemstone.
